About the course:
Building on the foundational knowledge from the Basic Music Theory course, this intermediate level delves deeper into complex harmony, including secondary dominants, leading-tone chords, and modulation techniques. Students will study advanced rhythmic concepts such as irregular and mixed meters, and explore extended chords like ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths. The course includes detailed analysis of classical forms such as sonata-allegro, rondo, and theme and variations, and advances in counterpoint techniques with three and four-part writing. Orchestration and arranging are introduced, with practical assignments on writing for different ensembles. The history of Western music is continued, covering the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, highlighting significant composers and developments in musical forms and genres.
