About the Course:
This advanced course aims to master sophisticated theoretical concepts and analytical techniques. Students will explore chromatic harmony, altered chords, and extended harmonic practices of the late Romantic period. The course covers 20th-century music techniques such as atonality, serialism, impressionism, and minimalism, along with modern forms of musical analysis including set theory and twelve-tone technique. Students will engage in advanced ear training and sight-singing, and undertake complex composition projects incorporating contemporary styles and technologies. The course also includes an in-depth study of ethnomusicology and world music traditions, comparing non-Western musical systems with Western practices. The history of music from the late 19th century to the present is covered, emphasizing key movements, composers, and the impact of technology on music creation and dissemination.
